clover on “‘AI resurrections’ and other technofascist illusions”

my good friend clover wrote a great piece on AI and Big Tech’s predilection for bringing back the dead:

it violates the life and autonomy of the dead. it’s pure illusion magic, but with the intention to control and deceive instead of delight. it’s a tech billionaire (or an aspirant) leading a séance. they cannot be trusted but aren’t asking permission. in consequence, many have and will be conned into relying on the technology anyway. have we yet seen enough of the future being sold to us? llms are not thinking, feeling, sensing algorithms. pushers of this false artificial intelligence are asking an equation to behave like a brain. our understanding of consciousness is shaky at best. every company that owns a popular generative model has shown with their updates how willing they are to manipulate the outputs of their systems for customer and stakeholder retention, or to avoid liability in court
